Cabinets painted with ordinary paint often do chip around the handles, because that is where fingernails, rings, keys and pots hit the finish hundreds of times a week. Cabinets sprayed with a two-part (2K) coating cure into a hard, cross-linked shell that is far tougher against chips, scratches and daily wear, so the area around the pulls holds up the way a factory finish does, not the way a painted one does.
If you have been burned by a painted kitchen before, read this before you spend anything. Then price your own kitchen online, in minutes, with the guarantees in writing.
Our goal is to deliver each client a kitchen with a look and feel that is polished, with the latest conveniences.
Why do painted cabinets chip in the first place?
Ordinary paint dries. It sits on the surface as a film, and a film gets lifted by a fingernail, scraped by a ring, or rubbed through by the thousandth hand reaching for the same door. The handles take the worst of it because that is where every touch lands.
A two-part (2K) coating is different in kind, not just in grade. Two components are mixed before spraying and react into a hard, cross-linked shell. That shell is far tougher against chips, scratches and daily wear than ordinary paint. It is also waterborne and low-VOC, it will not yellow, and it resists moisture and the chemicals that end up on cabinet doors in a kitchen that gets used.
What does a factory finish change?
Three things, and all of them matter at the handle.
Where it is applied. Your doors and drawer fronts come to our shop and are sprayed flat, in controlled conditions, with our industry leading European 2K cabinet coating. That is how new cabinets are finished, which is why the result is a factory finish and not a painted one. The boxes are sprayed on site in the same coating and colour.
How it cures. The cross-linked shell is what stands up to rings, keys and knuckles at the pull.
How it is backed. Guarantees are easy to write and hard to honour. Ours are specific.
What are you actually guaranteed?
The Day One Guarantee. Word for word: "Any scratch or ding in the first 60 days, no matter how it happened, and we respray it like new at no charge. Once, on up to one third of your doors, drawer fronts and side panels." The first two months are when a new finish meets real life: moving day, a dropped pan, a kid with a toy truck. If that happens, it is our problem, not yours.
A 20-year no-peel warranty on the coating. The longest cabinet coating warranty we know of in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area.
Fully insured for $2 million and WSIB covered.
Be clear on what each covers. The Day One Guarantee is for scratches and dings in the first 60 days, however they happened. The 20-year warranty is against peeling. Neither promises a coating that can never be marked, because no honest finisher can promise that. What we promise is a shell far harder to mark than paint, and a free fix in the window when damage most often happens.
Who this is for, and who should skip it
This is the kitchen it suits: 10 to 20 years old, in a family home, townhome or condo built in the 2000s or 2010s in Oakville, Burlington, Mississauga, Ancaster, Toronto, North York or Milton, doors looking dated and worn on the outside, boxes in excellent condition and not very different from the new ones a renovation would install. The layout works. You want a real, impactful update for a fraction of the cost of a renovation, with the upgrades a new kitchen would have, and without the mess, the permit and the months of construction.
It is not for boxes that are swollen, crumbling or water-damaged. It is not for peeling thermofoil, which cannot be saved and should be replaced with new doors on the existing boxes. It is not for a kitchen whose layout is changing, or whose counters are coming out and taking the cabinets with them. We will tell you if that is your kitchen.
What does it cost, and what else do you get?
The New Coating Package is $4,180 + HST for up to 35 doors and drawer fronts, boxes included. Larger kitchens go up incrementally with the number of doors. Most kitchens take 4 to 6 working days, 2 or 3 of them in your home, and the kitchen is usable each evening. No permit. No demolition. Counters, backsplash, sink, appliances, flooring and layout stay.
For a little more, you can add the features people usually only consider once they are spending $35,000 or more on a renovation: made-to-measure doors at $16 per square foot + HST in four shaker and slab styles, deep-drawer conversions from $778.50 + HST per cabinet with the new doors package, storage fitted inside your existing cabinets, soft-close Blum hinges, and a choice of 40 designer pulls.
